“The Foxes” defeat Nika-Luzales in the opening game of the tournament in Samara

UMMC achieved a hard-fought victory in the first game of the President's Cup of the Basketball Federation of the Samara Region. The game was tough, with the winner determined in the final minute.

At the start of the encounter, the team coached by Dmitrii Donskov opened the scoring, but soon the opponents from Komi quickly narrowed the gap and even gained a small advantage of 5 points. However, the quarter ended in favor of the “Foxes” – 19:15.

In the second quarter, UMMC confidently pulled ahead. Two accurate three-point shots from Zhosselina Maiga extended the lead to a comfortable 10 points, but by the end of the period, the “Lynxes” narrowed the gap – the teams went for the halftime break with a score of 37:31 in favor of the Yekaterinburg team.

The second half of the game was equally tough. While the Yekaterinburg team won the third quarter with a score of 47:40, the final period saw a tense fight, it was a close game. With 30 seconds left before the final buzzer, a successful drive to the basket by Olairi Kosu gave the “Foxes” a minimal one-point advantage, securing their victory in the first game of the Samara tournament with a score of 62:61.

In the squad of UMMC, Olairi Kosu became the scoring leader with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Zhosselina Maiga added 8 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Eva Lisec had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Jovana Nogic scored 8 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made 4 assists.

In the squad of Nika, Anastasia Logunova was the top-scorer with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist. Qadashah Hoppie contributed 12 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. Bria Holmes added 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.     

The next game for UMMC will take place tomorrow, on September 24. In the second encounter of the Samara tournament, the “Foxes” will face Nadezhda from the Orenburg region. The game starts at 5:00 PM Yekaterinburg time.
