On February 27, as part of the regular championship of the Women's Super League, UMMC-Junior hosted Peresvet-SFedU from Rostov-on-Don. The encounter ended with a convincing victory for the UMMC youth team. It should be noted that the previous meeting of the teams within the first round of the Fonbet Russian Championship ended in victory for the Yekaterinburg team with a score of 99:57.
Quarters’ results: 23:17, 26:8, 23:11, 17:15
Already in the first quarter, the juniors secured a quite comfortable lead. The team gained a twofold advantage thanks to the effective attacks of Margarita Kuziakina, Elizaveta Kolotovkina and Polina Kuznetsova, who scored a total of 18 points only in the first half of the period. However, with the first quarter coming to a close, the Rostov team rallied and cut the deficit to 6 points – 23:17.
The hosts also won the second quarter. The leaders of the standings did not allow the visiting team to get closer in the score. By the halftime, the junior “Foxes” were 24 points ahead – 49:25.
There was no intrigue in the third period either. Several accurate mid-range shots by Polina Kuznetsova, Elizaveta Kolotovkina and Daria Sidorova extended the lead to 36 points; the score was 72:36 in favour of Tatyana Fefilova’s team.
Only the final quarter turned out to be competitive, but even without that the victory was crushing – 89:51.
Polina Kuznetsova, UMMC-Junior forward:
- The opponent has a very strong “front line”; the main task for us was to grab rebounds. According to the statistics, we coped with this. As for me personally, I’m quite happy with my performance today, but you can always play even better - that motivates me. Also, ranking first is inspiring, but the main thing now is not to relax, as there are still many important games ahead.
In the squad of UMMC-Junior, Polina Kuznetsova scored 21 points. Elizaveta Kolotovkina reached a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Margarita Kuziakina and Daria Sharova added 12 points apiece.
In the squad of Peresvet-SFedU, Elizaveta Zaitseva earned 20 points. Viktoria Yakovleva accumulated 10 points and 3 rebounds.
The juniors will play the next game on the road in Noginsk. On March 4, they will face the local Spartak. The game starts at 5:00 p.m.
