28.04.11 | UMMC is Champion of Russia

It took Gundars Vetra wards inferior limit of matches to deal with Sparta&K M.R. in the country’s Championship final best-of-five series. The third battle, which has been held tonight in Vidnoe, was determinative.

The first quarter of the match didn’t promise the guests an easy walk. Players from Vidnoe had seriously prepared for the third final game and assigned to the guests from Ekaterinburg in this period the role of pursuers. Thus, the Foxes took a minus in their pocket to the locker-room.

Nevertheless, the tutors of Moscow Region retinue failed to find an effective antidote from UMMC. Third quarter became a turning point of the game. Sparta&K bogged down in UMMC’s defense and were making one mistake after another.

For UMMC Maria Stepanova acted reliably under the boards. The team’s captain, wearing number eleven on her shirt made a symbolic double-double in this champion match: 11 points and 11 rebounds. Quick-moving Celine Dumerc nailed three three-pointers into the opponents’ basket, remembering about assists for her teammates as well. Concentrated Cappie Pondexter was hundred-per-cent accurate. Candace Parker with indefatigable pertinacity was tearing the defense of Vidnoe players and provided fire-power with her 20 points.

In the final ten the guests didn’t lose grip and were dictating pace till final victory. Eventually the UMMC won the series by – 3:0 and for the third consecutive time became Champions of Russia.
